Who all is gon be at this game tonight? I'm thinking about goin an checking it out. I've been to 1 Coeburn game the last 4 years and the old lady is workin till 10:30 tonight so aint got anything else to do.

If I weren't goin to Clintwood/Volunteer to watch the bro-in-law play, I'd be there. I'd like to see ya, catch up on things--haven't seen you in a few years now.

By the way--keep an eye on the bass drum section in Coeburn's band--one of those kids kind of looks like an bigger, taller, hairier version of me...you'll be surprised to see how my bro's turned out. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

Man I dont really even remember you having a little brother, kinda seems like I do but not really. Id love to go to the Clintwood game but theres no way Id be able to so I'll have to settle with the Kelly/Coeburn game. I don't even remember the last time I seen ya, it would be good to catch up tho. We'll have to get together one weekend and watch a good football game or something.

I still catch as much Coeburn athletics as I can, especially basketball/baseball/tennis, but as you well know already--I've got a bro-in-law playing on the team for Clintwood--and the wife wants to see him as much as possible since he's getting PT and doing well. I like watching the style of ball Clintwood's playing currently, so I go to more of their games as a result.

Besides--you've been posting on here a bunch lately. Shouldn't you be out around Nickelsville, scouring the countryside for exchange students? It's almost basketball time in TS you know, they need a starting five--so get crackin...[img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

Nick's fine--he was back kicking against Appy. He kicked off in the 1st quarter after they were up by so much as a matter of fact. That helmet to the knee he took against Haysi looked worse than what it was--he's almost 100% good now.

Robbins is still 1st string kicker, and should be as long as he's not knicked up from taking hits like he was last season and season before...but, Nick's getting work in just in case they need to rest Robbins elsewhere for him to be effective on offense or defense--the first thing to go for Robbins if they cut back his workload will be the kicking.

COEBURN, Va. ? Matt Dotson does not fit the template for a quarterback.

The J.J. Kelly senior is only 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, yet he does everything right.

Friday night's performance against non-district rival Coeburn offered another dose of the right stuff.

Dotson directed the Kelly offense with flair as the Indians posted a 21-6 win at Carl McConnell Stadium.

"I just try to keep our offense in the flow and take whatever the defense gives us,"? said Dotson, who helped guide the Indian baseball team to a state title last spring. "We executed well tonight."?

The Indians collected 190 yards rushing under challenging circumstances. Senior halfback Devan Sproles, who entered the night leading the Lonesome Pine District with 384 yards rushing, was sidelined due a shoulder injury suffered in last week's game against J.I. Burton. Kelly also played without versatile Jordan Bates.

"With our two starting running backs out with injuries, we knew it was going to be a tough game with little scoring,"? Dotson said. "We just had to grind it out and play tough defense."?

Dotson added two interceptions, several deflected passes and three extra point kicks.

Kelly coach B. I. Salyers has seen the balancing act many times before from his senior leader, who sports a radical Mohawk haircut.

"Matt has all the potential in the world to be a pretty daggone good quarterback,"? Salyers said. "He threw the ball well in this game, made good decisions and ran our offense.

"When Matt comes to the line of scrimmage, he can tell everybody on the offense where to go. I've only seen one other quarterback that could that and it was (Division III All-American) Gary Collier at Emory & Henry."?

Kenny Lester, a 185-pound junior, replaced Sproles in the backfield and managed 40 yards rushing on 10 carries. Fullback Lucas Kerns, a 160-pound junior supplied a career-best
100 yards rushing on 21 carries.

"Jordan and Devan are our two best football players,"? Salyers said. "Kenny and Lucas stepped in and played well."?

As usual, the Coeburn offense focused on Shane Bright.

The 5-foot-10, 225-pound senior entered the 2008 season with more than 3,000 yards rushing, then churned for 301 yards and four touchdowns on more than 30 carries last week against Pound.

Bright was held to 49 yards on 16 carries Friday, as senior Will Strength led the Kelly defense.

"We always try to establish Shane early, but our opening drive was about as balanced as we can be,"? Coeburn coach Greg Mullins said.

Coeburn, the Cumberland District preseason favorite, opened a 6-0 first quarter lead when quarterback Jon Dean connected with Hunter Bond for a 50-yard scoring pass on fourth down.

"I was pleased with that series, then we had another opportunity to score inside Kelly's 15-yard line before stalling out,"? Mullins said.

Behind the efficient Dotson, Kelly answered with 14 straight first half points. Kerns gave the Indians a 14-6 lead on a one-yard run with 40 seconds left.

Kerns added another four-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter.

The depth advantage for Kelly became evident as the game progressed.

"Kelly has 50 kids and we were only able to dress 28 tonight,"? Mullins said. "With a regular roster of 34, that makes a big difference. Kelly is a good team, but our kids kept playing hard."?
